Bike rides, concert this June

DOWNEY – The city’s first “Rock-N-Ride” event, a combination music festival and bicycle ride, will take place June 14 in Downey.

The event begins with the Tour De Downey, a 35-mile bicycle ride from downtown Downey to Long Beach’s Shoreline Village and back.

For less experienced riders, there is also a 6-mile ride that begins downtown and heads to Dennis the Menace Park and Furman Park, before ending at City Hall.

Kids ages 3-7 can ride in a closed course that features an oval loop and obstacle course.

Riders must be at least 8 years old to participate in the 35-mile ride. Kids ages 8-14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost is $25 for adults and $18 for students ages 8-17 if paid before June 6. Registration is $30 for adults and $24 for students on the day of the event.

Cost for the 6-mile ride is $25 for a family of four (two adults and two children) or $10 for an individual.

There is no cost for kids to ride the children’s course.

The 35-mile ride departs at 7:30 a.m., with check-in starting at 6:30. The 6-mile ride begins at 9 a.m., and the children’s course opens at 10.

Meanwhile, the musical festival Make Music Downey will begin at 11 a.m. The second annual event will feature a main stage at the Civic Center with other locations throughout the downtown.

The free concert festival also features a vendor fair and open seating. More details on performers will be released at a later date.

In-person registration for the bike event is accepted Monday through Friday at the Downey Parks & Recreation office at 7850 Quill Dr. For more information, call (562) 904-7238.
