DOWNEY – The Downey Chamber of Commerce announced today that longtime director Sue Nordin has stepped down after over 20 years of service with the organization including the last eight years as executive director.
“Sue has been an outspoken advocate for the business community in her 22 years and our Chamber has reached several important milestones during Sue’s tenure.” said Patty Kotze, Board President. “Under Sue’s leadership the Annual Street Faire flourished drawing over 10,000 people a year to our community, and the Christmas Parade is still one of the best in the area every year.”
Sue Nordin is a longtime resident of the City of Downey. She was raised on Cherry Avenue and attended Downey High School. Nordin started her career with the Chamber as a part-time secretary in 1992 and worked her way up, taking on more and more of the special events.
In 2006, the board appointed her executive director.
“The Downey Chamber is like family to me as many of my friends are connected to it,” said Nordin, “and I’ve always appreciated the value of this organization to the business community in our city.”
Anyone who knows Sue knows she loved the Chamber’s special events. The Oldies but Goodies concert was by far her favorite event. She is even known for looking forward to the Street Faire though it was a grueling 14-hour day for her and her staff. But to Sue, the Street Faire was a great way to bring thousands of people into the town she loved! “It’s our way to ‘show off’ Downey!” Nordin stated recently.
“Sue will be greatly missed,” said Jan Scott, immediate past president. “I’ll never forget those early mornings getting ready for the Street Faire, and late nights dancing in the office to whatever music we could find that kept us going getting ready for the next event!”
The Downey Chamber Board of Directors is holding a celebration for Sue’s years of service on Thursday, March 13, at 5:30 pm at the Rio Hondo Event Center, inside Hackers Bar and Grill. All are welcome to attend.
