Congresswoman's absence

Dear Editor:
I doubt anyone read Alex Rojo Jr.’s essay without being brought to some heightened emotion (“Christmas in Iraq,” 12/27/12). He served our country, and we are in his debt as we are to all our soldiers.
Contrast his service with the lack of representation from our elected Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard. While watching C-SPAN’s coverage of the House debates on Dec. 20, what do I see but a lady walk to the lectern requesting Mrs. Allard be excused from that day’s participation through Jan. 2. No reason was given and the request was granted.
Rojo showed up for his assignments, working in 100-plus degree heat for hours, but Mrs. Allard failed to show up for her job during a critical time in Congress when members were in negotiations over the fiscal cliff.
I voted for Mrs. Allard but she will not get my vote again. When we needed her in Congress she was missing in action.
I’ve watched the Senate and House over the years when critical votes were being cast and I’ve seen men and women show up with oxygen tanks at their sides in wheelchairs. They recognized the importance of being in attendance and voting. Mrs. Allard failed to do her job and should not be re-elected in two years.
