Downey’s Edward Mejia heads to Italy

DOWNEY – Downey resident Edward Mejia embarked on the trip of a lifetime last weekend – a 10-month study abroad journey to Florence, Italy.

Mejia is starting his junior year as a California State University, Chico student in the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany.

He intends to study the Italian language and travel around Europe throughout his time in the E.U.

This is a welcomed break from Mejia’s busy schedule as a student leader at the second-oldest university of the CSU system.

He is involved in a multitude of clubs, including Habitat for Humanity, the council for the university’s community affair council, Lead Cat organization, the Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE), and the Golden Gate Bridge project in which he cleaned the beaches of San Francisco with a group of fellow student volunteers.

He also enjoyed a summer of ‘workcation’ as a camp counselor for children last summer at the River Way Ranch Camp near Fresno.

Many of his camp counselor friends that he made during the summer were from England, and he plans to visit them during his time abroad.

He was awarded last week the first place scholarship from the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate  Professionals  Montebello/ LA chapter

Mejia is the son of Downey residents Eduardo and Paula Mejia, and the brother of Jacquelinne Mejia, a former intern for the Downey Patriot who also studied abroad in Europe during her six-month stay in Pamplona, Spain.
