Kiwanis Foundation awards $60K in scholarships

DOWNEY − Thirty-three high  school students from Downey, Warren, Lakewood and St. Pius X – St. Matthias high schools received scholarships from the Downey Kiwanis Foundation last night totaling $60,000.

Formed in 1985, the foundation established the scholarships “for economically disadvantaged high school students who have shown a willingness to support their community and who need help in continuing their training.”

The original six scholarships have expanded to more than 30 scholarships for Downey Unified students.

“It is always a pleasure to personally get to know the students we are awarding the scholarships to,” said Jerry Wetzstein, president of Downey Kiwanis Foundation. “Our students work very hard and the scholarships are very well-deserved.”

Students applied for several different scholarships varying from $250 to $20,000. Students were interviewed by Downey Kiwanis Club members as the final selection process for the scholarship.

Scholarship winners include: Delia Lozano, Annais Ocampo, Said Bustos, Agustin Ramos, Tiffany Escobar, Francisco Lomeli, Kevin Solares, Mario Lopez, Nicole Jessica Siryj, Yousef Hariri, Ernesto Rojas, Victor Martinez, Jared Topacio, Christine Nam, Arnold Gonzalez, Kimberly Topete, Cynthia Villegas, Steven Duran, Kristine Pena, Omar Martinez, Marjan Abubo, Jessica Samaniego, Giannina Marciano , Kimberly Rivera, James Ziegenbein, Elisabeth Shimada, Connor Hill, Maya Johnson, Marisol Pulido, Meme Phay, Jenny Kim, Marlene Lizbeth Arceo and Yesenia Rodriguez.
