DOWNEY – Longtime Downey resident John McKinsey was sworn-in as president of Downey Sertoma Club recently and will serve through 2015.
Sertoma (Service to Mankind) is a service club that specializes in serving the deaf and hard of hearing community.
The Downey club meets twice a month for dinner meetings at Cafe N Stuff.
The club recently completed its 16th annual week-long fantasy baseball camp for deaf campers, with kids bussed to Angel Stadium where they hit balls and run the bases. Participants also receive free Angels tickets and are recognized on the scoreboard.
This year, the club started a fantasy ice skating camp which will be brought back next year.
Downey Sertoma Club also helps sponsors the Downey YMCA, Arc, Downey Rose Float Association, Meals on Wheels, Downey PTA HELPS, Food for Help, Toys for Tots and other organizations. They also sponsor free hearing tests at the senior center.
