Norwalk increases patrol to crack down on unsafe motorcycle riders

NORWALK – Extra sheriff’s deputies will be on patrol in Norwalk this Thursday in search of unsafe motorcycle riders.

Deputies will be cracking down on motorcyclists who are speeding, making illegal turns or who appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Authorities said deputies will also be looking for violations made by other vehicles that can lead to motorcycle crashes.

In 2011, there were 16 collisions involving motorcycles reported in Norwalk, including one crash that was fatal. Fifteen people were hurt.

In 2012, the number of collisions rose to 21, but there were no fatalities and the number of injuries dropped to 13.

Most motorcycle crashes are a result of speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and drugs, according to California collision data.

The Norwalk Sheriff’s Station is also reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

Funding for the extra patrol is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
