Students win first place for volunteering

DOWNEY – Downey High School’s KIWINS Club recently returned from the California-Nevada-Hawaii district convention with an assortment of trophies and awards.

Seven members attended the convention in San Ramon, Calif., where they participated in leadership training workshops, taught a forum on servant leadership, and took part in competitions.

At the convention’s awards banquet, the club walked away with five trophies, including the first-place club trophy for the district’s Pediatric Trauma Prevention Program.

Club secretary Maya Johnson, a senior at Downey High, accepted the award on behalf of KIWINS. She plans to study nursing at San Jose State.

“I felt so honored to receive this award for our club because we really helped make a difference in the lives of many children by educating them about potential hazards that exist in everyday life,” she said. “This is why I want to become a nurse, to serve and protect children who are vulnerable.”

Maya and other student leaders also organized bicycle training sessions at last year’s National Night Out and also at Apollo Park with the Downey Bicycle Coalition.

Students also offered bicycle tips at a community event hosted by Home Depot.
