DOWNEY – The lady’s putting on another party, and this one’s especially flashy. After all, with more than half a century of experience, she really has it down, and year after year our city is the better for it.
“She” is the Downey Symphony, the party date is Saturday evening, April 6, in the Downey Theatre, and you are invited to enjoy a gorgeous concert, special events and complimentary champagne and refreshments that round off the orchestra’s 55th season.
Along with wonderful music by Berlioz (Roman Carnival Overture) and Brahms (Symphony No. 4), the gifted soprano Diana Newman will sing Songs of the Auvergne, and our 2010 baton winner, Dara Small, conducts a work you’ve never heard before, betcha. The auction for next year’s lucky bidder is also on the agenda.
DUSD Superintendent Wendy Doty will be honored for her considerable work in furthering the symphony’s contributions to the community with its Music in the Schools programs. Dr. Doty is retiring after a distinguished career leading our school district, and we wish to extend to her a public appreciation.
So. Party time on April 6 begins at 7:15 p.m. with a discussion of the evening’s music by Music Director Sharon Lavery, the concert starts at 8, and tickets are available by calling the theater box office, (562) 861-8211, or before the performance. The theater is located at 8435 Firestone Blvd., and parking is free. Come join us!
