DOWNEY – Jean Barrett Holloway, author of “Weightlifting Rules” (Tebot Bach), a “surprising and fascinating” collection of poems that explore the world of Olympic-style weightlifting, will be the featured poet at Third Thursday Poetry on Sept. 19 at the Epic Lounge.
Holloway’s poems describe her years of involvement with a hardcore weightlifting team, and immerse readers in the dark energy of the training room “dungeon.”
An accomplished poet, Holloway is also author of “This World So Frail: Kwajalein Poems” (Conflux Press). Her work has been published in “Spillway,” “Poetry Bay,” Tiger’s Eye” and “Ha!”
An actor, weightlifting coach and teacher in the UCLA Extension Certificated Program in Fitness Instruction, she has written articles that touch on the issues of strength and women, and the specific benefits of strength training for women of all ages.
She holds a BA and an MFA in theater arts and an MA in physical education from USC.
Doors to Third Thursday Poetry open at 7 p.m., followed by an open mike at 7:30. All ages are welcome.
