Woman's Club learns about autism

DOWNEY – The Woman’s Club of Downey celebrated Autism Awareness Month by wearing blue at its most recent meeting.
Patty Salgado, whose son has autism, spoke about the disorder and encouraged residents to wear as much blue as possible in April.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our community would often wear blue this month?” she said.
Salgado also offered facts regarding autism, including:
*autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 50 boys
*autism prevalence figures are growing
*autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
*autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
*autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
*boys are nearly fives times more likely than girls to have autism
*there is no medical detection or cure for autism
