Character Counts events at library

DOWNEY - The Downey City Library will offer three storytimes in partnership with the Downey Unified School District to celebrate Character Counts Week, Oct. 19-25.Preschool Storytime will be offered Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.; Bilingual Storytime on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.; and Family Story Night on Thursday at 7 p.m. The free storytimes for preschool children and their families will focus on the program's "six pillars of character": trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Character Counts is a community-based program that provides children with a framework for ethical living and helps them make better choices in life. Last year, more than 5 million children in 51 countries celebrated the Six Pillars of Character. The Downey City Library offers a Character Counts book display and reading list of books for preschool through eighth grade. "Character Counts also changes the lives of adults who teach children and enriches the entire community," said Gina Orello, children's librarian. For more information, call (562) 904-7360, ext. 4.
