City's fireworks show expected to draw thousands

DOWNEY - Final preparations are underway for the city of Downey's 4th of July fireworks show tomorrow at the new Discovery Sports Complex near Downey Studios.The free, all-day event will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting and flag-raising ceremony. Youth sporting events begin at 10 a.m. The festival will also include jump houses for kids, carnival games, live music and entertainment, and food. The event will culminate with a 30-minute fireworks show at 9 p.m. No on-site parking will be available at the event. Instead, residents are urged to park at the L.A. County Probation Department (9150 E. Imperial Hwy) or at the L.A. County Office of Education (9300 E. Imperial Hwy.). A limited amount of handicaped parking will be available at 12400 Clark Ave., immediately adjacent to the park. Free shuttle service will be available from 5-10:30 p.m. A drop-off only zone will also be available directly in front of the park. Alcoholic beverages, barbecues and pets will not be permitted inside the park. Also prohibited are all forms of fireworks, including "safe and sane." Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. For security reasons, coolers and other packages may be searched. "The city of Downey would like this to be a fun and safe event for everyone," city officials said in a statement.
