DOWNEY — Labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta will swear-in Assembly member Cristina Garcia when she takes a public oath of office Saturday, Feb. 2, at Downey Adult School.

The public ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

According to her official biography, Huerta “found her calling as an organizer while serving in the leadership of the Stockton Community Service Organization (CSO). During this time she founded the Agricultural Workers Association, set up voter registration drives and pressed local governments for barrio improvements.”

Garcia was re-elected to the state Assembly last November. The Feb. 2 ceremony will feature live cultural entertainment, food trucks, and special guests.

Guests are asked to bring boxed tampons, pads, packaged underwear, socks and toiletries, which will be donated to groups who work with the homeless population in the 58th Assembly district.
