Downey hosting two Memorial Day commemorations

DOWNEY – The city of Downey is hosting a pair of public Memorial Day events Monday. The first event begins at 11 a.m. at the Downey Cemetery. The ceremony will feature remarks by cemetery district trustees, a wreath laying, a rifle salute by America Legion Post 270, speakers from the Living Tree Foundation, songs by Williams Elementary ASPIRE students, the reading of winning essays by Sussman Elementary students, and the playing of Taps.

Visitors should park at the Green Line transit station on Lakewood Boulevard and take a free shuttle to the cemetery. The ceremony is expected to last about one hour.

The second event begins at 1 p.m. in the Civic Center. This event will feature remarks by the City Council, posting of colors, wreath presentation and playing of Taps.

Parking is available at the Civic Center.
