Downey soccer team wins Cup

DOWNEY - The Downey FC Storm boys 10u soccer team won the Governors Division championship at the 2013 Sports Authority Cup, a tournament hosted by Cal South Feb. 16-17.Played at Platinum Park in San Bernardino, Downey FC Storm beat United FC Soccer Club BO2 Gold to win the championship. Eric Reyes scored the game's only goal but it was enough for Downey to win, 1-0. Downey qualified for the Sports Authority Cup after finishing 4-0 in the qualifying rounds held Feb. 2-3 in Lancaster. They traveled to Coronado Island for the elimination rounds on Feb. 9-10. Downey beat Spartans B-02 by a 4-3 score to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Downey defeated CSA Cypress White, 3-0. They beat MB Sand and Surf, 7-3, to advance to the finals. Head coach Cesar Ruvalcaba said he was "very proud of his team" and also thanked United Soccer Club "for great sportsmanship and great soccer play." "The team would have not been successful if not for the support of the parents, coaches and competitive play by the players," Ruvalcaba said.
