Downey to launch 'Spend Local' marketing campaign

DOWNEY – The City Council on Tuesday signed off a new marketing campaign that will encourage residents to spend their money in Downey.

Titled “Spend Local,” the campaign will kick off Dec. 1 with a multi-faceted ad campaign.

The city’s Discover Downey social media channels will be utilized to emphasize “Shop Local” and the importance of keeping money within city limits.

“The goal of the proposed campaign is to promote a thriving and sustainable local economy while fostering a sense of pride and loyalty among the Downey community,” management analyst Ruby Picon wrote in a report to the City Council.

In addition to social media, “Spend Local” will be promoted at city facilities, in the Downey Patriot and the Downey Orbit, the city’s quarterly activities guide.

The city will also partner with the Downey Chamber of commerce to provide new chamber members with “Spend Local” decals and feature ribbon cuttings on the Discover Downey social media pages.

According to Picon, “Spend Local” will develop content highlighting Downey businesses and share positive content from popular social media accounts.

The City Council allocated $1,000 to launch the program.
