Downey Unified's summer programs now underway

DOWNEY -- Beginning the week of June 11,  Downey Unified launched its summer enrichment programs for students, this includes summer school at each high school, extended school year programs (for special needs students), Summer 101 and STEAMworks. 

Available at Columbus, Downey and Warren high schools, summer school programs are available for high school students Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from June 11 to July 19. 

The summer enrichment program titled STEAMworks will be located at Gallatin, Gauldin, Rio Hondo and Rio San Gabriel elementary schools as well as Doty and Sussman middle schools, Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to approximately noon, beginning June 11 through July 12.  

This program, which will enrich approximately 850 students, instructs them on the basis of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).

Summer 101, a five-week program for first grade through eighth-grade students, will be located at Griffiths Middle School, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to noon beginning June 12 through July 7.

Downey Unified is also participating in the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, providing meals without charge to all children, ages 18 and younger. Meal services were previously only served on a Monday through Thursday schedule, yet for this year’s Seamless Summer Program, Fridays have been added.  The following school sites and times are available for this program:

Breakfast only at Alameda Elementary School, now through July 12, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

Breakfast and lunch at Gallatin, Gauldin, Rio Hondo and Rio San Gabriel elementary schools, now through July 6, 2018, from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Lunch only at Doty, Griffiths and Sussman middle schools, now to July 12, 2018, from 10:50 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

Lunch only at Columbus, Downey and Warren high schools, now through July 19, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

The Downey Unified School District’s office hours have also been altered during the summer school schedule, only open Monday through Thursday from 7:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

The upcoming 2018-19 school year will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 15.
