Elderly woman killed crossing Florence Avenue

DOWNEY– An elderly woman was killed Tuesday evening after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy Downey intersection.

The collision occurred at about 5:53 p.m. as the woman crossed Florence Avenue at Rives Avenue.

“The collision occurred when the elderly female was attempting to cross Florence Avenue, southbound, within the intersection,” investigators said in a news release.

A Kia Soul driven by a 69-year-old male resident of Downey struck the woman. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, officials said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Downey paramedics. The driver of the Kia was not injured.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Fe Springs station are investigating the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at (562) 868-0503 or Sgt. Jaime Pelayo of the Downey Police Department at (562) 904-2342.
