DOWNEY - Low-income Downey residents are invited to apply for a new home through the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new home, located at 12812 Blodgett Ave., will take place tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Habitat for Humanity will also be offering free exterior home repairs to nearby homeowners through its Brush with Kindness program. Applicants for the home must either live or work in Downey and meet certain income restrictions. They must also invest 500 hours of "sweat equity" and qualify for a 0% interest mortgage. Applicants must attend a mandatory orientation session tomorrow at Downey Adult School (1:30 p.m. in Spanish, 3 p.m. in English) or Tuesday at the Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center (6 p.m. in English, 7:30 p.m. in Spanish). Habitat for Humanity has made the home available through partnerships with the city of Downey's Community Development Department and local Lutheran congregations.********** Published: March 27, 2009 - Volume 7 - Issue 49
