Memorial Day commemoration at Downey Cemetery

DOWNEY – Downey Cemetery will host a Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m. The ceremony will feature remarks by Downey Cemetery District trustees, a wreath-laying ceremony, a rifle salute by American Legion Post 270, speakers from the Living Tree Foundation, songs by Williams Elementary’s ASPIRE program, the reading of essays written by Sussman Elementary students, and the playing of Taps.

The essay contest was open to Sussman students through Downey’s ASPIRE after-school program. Prizes were donated by Norm’s, Elephant Bar, Golf N’ Stuff and Bob’s Big Boy.

Visitors should park in the Green Line parking lot and take a free shuttle to the cemetery. The bus will also return guests to the Green Line.

The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial Wall and Garden, and will last about an hour.
