More military banners to be added

DOWNEY - An additional 15 street banners paying tribute to active military personnel will be placed along firestone Boulevard during the week following Memorial Day, city officials announced this week. The first 20 banners went up last Veterans Day and 20 more banners were added in February. The street banners honor active military personnel currently serving overseas, as nominated by family and friends. "While this is a small gesture of our appreciation, I think this is a very important city program," said Councilman Roger Brossmer, who initiated the program shortly after he was elected to City Council. "Our military men and women deserve to be recognized and honored, and these banners are a small token of our appreciation." The banners are paid for using donations, while the city is in charge of installation and maintenance. "I want to thank the donors who have already contributed and encourage others to contribute to this program [in] the future," Brossmer said. To make a donation towards the banner program, or to nominate a service member for a street banner, call (562) 904-1895 or go to the city's website at www.downeyca.org.
