Reusable bags given away

DOWNEY - Volunteers distributed approximately 500 free reusable bags to patrons of the Downey City Library and 400 reusable bags to shoppers at the Ralphs grocery store on Firestone Boulevard as the city celebrated "Day Without a Bag" on Dec. 14.Established four years ago by Heal the Bay - a Santa Monica non-profit - "Day Without a Bag" offered a countywide opportunity to expand the public's awareness of the benefits of reusable shopping bags as opposed to single-use plastic bags. The reusable bags donated in Downey were contributed by private donation and Heal the Bay. The new Fresh & Easy market distributed its own reusable bags. Prior to opening in Downey, Fresh & Easy donated 900 bags for last year's "Day Without a Bag" that were distributed to area students.
