Skate park to be renamed

DOWNEY - City officials will re-dedicated the Downey skate park with a party this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.The park, which opened in 2002, will be re-named the Meredith H. Perkins Skate Park in honor of former mayor Meredith Perkins, who was instrumental in having the skate park built at Independence Park. The ceremony is open to the public and will feature face-painting for kids, skateboarding demonstrations, a DJ, information booths and a free photo booth. Free skateboard lessons will also be offered (bring your own skateboard, helmet and pads). Three food trucks will be on-site as well: Shave It shaved ice, Mr. Dog hot dogs and the Surfer Taco.
