Sodetani honored with Diakonia Award

DOWNEY - DUSD board member Martha Sodetani was the third recipient of the Mayor's Diakonia Award recognizing outstanding service to the community.Sodetani received the award at the March 24 City Council meeting. In addition to her duties on the school board, Sodetani is actively involved with several community organizations, including the Assistance League of Downey, Downey PTA, Coordinating Council, Gangs Out of Downey, and Character Counts. Sodetani is dedicated to reaching out to others and demonstrates how simple acts of kindness can make a difference, Guerra said. "I am very proud to call Martha my friend," he said. "The example she has given to me and others makes her a very special person and it would be wrong of me not to recognize her." The Mayor's Diaknoia Award is presented each month to outstanding community volunteers. Diakonia means "servant" in Greek. To nominate a volunteer, call the City Council office at (562) 904-7274.
