Sports Briefs: Baseball seasons end prematurely in Downey

DOWNEY – The Warren High School baseball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-14 and were 5-5 in San Gabriel Valley League play. The Bears did not qualify for C.I.F. Division 2 postseason play. 

Warren defeated Lynwood twice, Dominguez twice and split their season series with Paramount. Warren was defeated twice by Gahr and twice by cross-town rival Downey. 
Gahr (23-6, 10-0) finished first, Paramount (19-11, 7-3) finished second and Downey (12-16, 6-4)finished third to secure the top three league entries, respectively. 

Gahr hosted Buena (13-14, 5-7) yesterday after the Bulldogs won their wild card game against Channel Islands (12-14, 6-6) on Tuesday 8-0. Paramount traveled to Moorpark (23-7, 9-3) on Thursday and Downey traveled to Mission Viejo (20-10, 9-3) yesterday after defeating Redlands (14-12-1, 8-6) at Downey 7-1 on Tuesday in a wild card game.

The Warren High School softball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 19-8 and were 8-2 in San Gabriel Valley League play. Gahr (22-5-2, 10-0) finished first, Warren finished second and Paramount (10-8, 5-5) finished third to secure the top three league entries, respectively. The three S.G.V.L. teams will all compete in the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.

Gahr hosted Harvard-Westlake (15-12, 5-3) Thursday, Warren hosted La Serna (19-8, 8-2) Thursday and Paramount hosted Burbank (11-16, 8-6) on Tuesday in a wild card game (scores unavailable at press time).

The Downey High School baseball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-16 and were 6-4 in San Gabriel Valley League play. 

The Vikings raced out to a 6-0 league record before they were defeated twice by Gahr and twice by Paramount. 

Downey fell to Gahr at Gahr 6-1 on 5/3 and 3-0 at Downey on 5/6. The Vikings fell to Paramount at Downey 7-6 on 5/10 and 6-5 at Paramount on 5/12. 

Downey is the number three entry from the S.G.V.L. behind Gahr (23-6, 10-0) and Paramount (19-11, 7-3) in the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs, respectively.  

The Vikings hosted and defeated Redlands (14-12-1) 7-1 on Tuesday in a wild card game. Downey traveled to Mission Viejo (20-10, 9-3) yesterday to play the Diablos (score unavailable at press time).

Gahr (21-5-2), Warren (19-8, 8-2) and Paramount (10-8, 5-5) were the number one, two and three league entires from the San Gabriel Valley League, respectively. Paramount defeated Downey at Paramount 3-2 on 5/10 to secure their third place finish by virtue of the C.I.F. second round game criteria. Paramount hosted Burbank on Tuesday in a wild card game.

The Downey Calvary Chapel baseball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 5-13-1 and were 2-8 in Academy League play. The Grizzlies did not qualify for C.I.F. Division 6 postseason play.

Sage Hill (23-1, 10-0), Crean Lutheran (19-7, 8-2) and St. Margaret’s (12-8, 6-4) were the three playoff entries from the Academy League. Sage Hill hosted Silver Valley (13-7, 7-7), Crean Lutheran hosted Chadwick (9-12, 6-6) and St. Margaret’s traveled to Providence (14-9, 8-2) (scores unavailable at press time).   

The Downey Calvary Chapel softball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 19-2 and were 8-0 in Academy League play. The Lady Grizzlies are the top league entry, Oxford Academy is the second entry (15-7, 4-4) and Whitney (11-13, 4-4) was the third entry, respectively. 

DCC hosted Crossroads (5-10, 4-8) yesterday, Oxford Academy hosted San Gabriel Mission (9-7, 8-2) yesterday and Whitney was defeated by Desert (15-5, 10-4) at Whitney 8-2 on Tuesday in a wild card game.

DCC is currently ranked third in Division 6 behind Paraclete (23-0, 12-0) and Savanna (26-2-1, 10-0), respectively. Coach Rodriguez, his staff and players are looking forward to making a deep run in the C.I.F. Division 6 playoffs.

The Downey middle school track and field season began last Thursday afternoon when Griffiths competed against Sussman at Warren High School and Doty competed against Stauffer at Downey High School.

Sussman won all six competitions against Griffiths. The eighth grade Sussman boys defeated Griffiths 53-31, the seventh grade Sussman boys defeated Griffiths 54-28 and the sixth grade Sussman boys defeated Griffiths 62-22.

The eighth grade Sussman girls defeated Griffiths 52-22, the seventh grade Sussman girls defeated Griffiths 57-20 and the sixth grade Sussman girls defeated Griffiths 58-18.

Doty won all six competitions against Stauffer. The eighth grade Doty boys defeated Stauffer 61-20, the seventh grade Doty boys defeated Staufer 72-14 and the sixth grade Doty boys defeated Stauffer 52-33.

The eighth grade Doty girls defeated Stauffer 59-27, the seventh grade Doty girls defeated Stauffer 77-5 and the sixth grade girls defeated Stauffer 79-7.

Stauffer competed against Sussman at Downey High School and Doty competed against Griffiths at Warren High School yesterday (scores unavailable at press time). 

Stauffer will compete against Griffiths at Warren and Doty will compete against Sussman at Downey next Thursday. The city championship track and field meet will be held on Friday, June 3, at Downey High School.
