Sports Briefs: Bears beat Downey in track and field

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ track and field team defeated cross-town rival Downey 75-61 on 4/14. 

With the win, Warren has now defeated the Lady Vikings for the third straight year.

Nicole Ramirez took first place in the discus and shot put. Laura Tidwell won the 200 and 400 meter runs and anchored the 4 X 400 meter relay. Gwendolyn Hurtado won the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and placed second in the 800 meter run. 

Carla Conant won the 800 and finished second in the 1600 meter run. Shemiah Odom won the 300 hurdles and took third in the 100 meter hurdles.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 10-11 and are 1-4 in S.G.V.L. play. 

The Bears are currently fifth in the San Gabriel Valley League standings behind Gahr (18-4, 5-0), Downey (11-12, 5-0), Paramount (14-10, 3-2) and Lynwood (3-8, 1-4), respectively. Dominguez is currently in sixth place (4-11, 0-5).

The Bears were defeated by Paramount at Warren 16-4 on 4/12, defeated Paramount at Paramount 7-6 on 4/15, were defeated by Gahr at Warren 5-4 on 4/19, were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 10-0 on 4/22 and were defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Warren 8-6 on Tuesday.

The Bears will travel to Downey later today for their rematch, will travel to Dominguez on 5/3, will host Dominguez on 5/6, will host Lynwood on 5/10 and will conclude their regular season schedule when they travel to Lynwood on 5/12.

The Bears are currently second in the San Gabriel Valley League standings behind Gahr (17-5-2, 5-0), respectively. Downey is currently in third (13-12, 4-2), Lynwood is currently in fourth, Paramount is currently in fifth and Dominguez is currently in sixth.

The Bears defeated Paramount at Warren 5-0 on 4/7, were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 3-2 in eight innings on 4/12, defeated cross-town rival Downey at Warren 11-0 on 4/14, defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 30-0 on 4/19, defeated Lynwood at Warren 17-0 on 4/21 and defeated Paramount at Paramount 12-4 on 4/26.

Warren hosted Gahr yesterday in their much anticipated rematch (score unavailable at press time), will travel to Downey on Tuesday, will host Dominguez on Thursday and will travel to Lynwood on 5/10 to conclude their regular season schedule.

The Downey High School softball team team currently has an overall record of 13-12 and are 4-2 in S.G.V.L. play. Downey defeated Lynwood at Downey 17-1 on 4/12 and defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 28-0 on 4/13. 

The Lady Vikings were defeated by cross-town rival Warren at Warren 11-0 on 4/14, were defeated by Gahr at Gahr 8-2 on 4/19, defeated Paramount at Downey 5-1 on 4/21 and defeated Dominguez at Downey 14-0 on Tuesday.

The Lady Vikings traveled to Lynwood yesterday (score unavailable at press time), will host Warren next Tuesday, will host Gahr next Thursday and will conclude their league schedule against Paramount at Paramount on 5/10.

Gahr (17-5-2, 5-0) is currently in first place, Warren (14-6, 5-1) is currently in second place, Downey (13-12, 4-2) is currently in third place, Lynwood is currently in fourth place, Paramount is currently in fifth place and Dominguez is currently in sixth place, respectively.

Coach Karzen, his staff and players are looking forward to finisihing their league season strong and earning a spot in the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. As is stands now, Downey will be the number three entry from the San Gabriel Valley League.

The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 11-12 and are 5-0 in S.G.V.L. play. Downey began league play with a 17-1 win against Dominguez at Dominguez on 4/12 and completed the season sweep of the Dons when they defeated Dominguez at Downey 12-3 on 4/15.

The Vikings then defeated Lynwood at Downey 3-2 in eight innings on 4/19 and completed the season sweep of the Knights when they defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 6-0 last Friday. 

Downey defeated cross-town rival Warren at Warren 8-6 on Tuesday and look to sweep the season series later today against the Bears at Downey. The Vikings are looking to improve to 12-12 on the season and 6-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

Downey will travel to Gahr (18-4, 5-0) next Tuesday and will host the Gladiators next Friday. The Vikings will conclude their regular season league schedule when they host Paramount on 5/10 and when they travel to Paramount on 5/12.

The Downey High School boys’ track and field team defeated cross-town rival Warren 70-66 on 4/14. With the win Downey has now defeated Warren in three of the last four dual meets.

Josh Cooper won the 100 and 200 meter sprints and was the anchor on the 4 X 100 relay along with Xavier Salas, Baraq Ross and Victor Solorzano. Solorzano also won the triple jump. Jayson Longino won the high jump and long jump and was second in the triple jump.
Brian Casillas won the pole vault, Oscar Payez won the discus and Edgar Beas won the 300 hurdles. The 4 X 400 relay team of Jaime Rodriguez, Armando Padilla, Jary Solis and Mario Marsetti won by .02 to clinch the dual meet victory. 

Coach Gleason and his staff were extremely proud of how well their athletes competed when they knew they needed to win the relay to win the meet.

The Downey Calvary Chapel softball team currently has an overall record of 15-2 and are 4-0 in Academy League play. 

The Lady Grizzlies defeated Oxford Academy at Oxford Academy 12-1 on 4/12, defeated Brethren Christian at Independence Park 13-3 on 4/14, defeated Whitney at Whitney 9-5 on 4/19 and defeated Crean Lutheran at Calvary Chapel 12-0 last Friday.

DCC will host Oxford Academy later today, will travel to Brethren Christian next Tuesday, will host Whitney next Friday and will travel to Crean Lutheran on 5/10 to conclude their regular season schedule. 

The Lady Grizzlies (15-2, 4-0) are currently in first place in the Academy League standings. Oxford Academy (13-5, 2-1) is currently in second place, Crean Lutheran (7-3-1, 2-2) is currently in third place, Whitney (7-9, 1-3) is currently in fourth place and Brethren Christian (6-5, 0-3) is currently in fifth place.  

The Lady Grizzlies have been led this season by senior catcher Tiana Rodriguez and freshman pitcher Raylene Roybal. Rodriguez is hitting .580 and leads the team with 29 hits. Roybal has collected eleven wins inside the circle and is hitting .535. Junior third baseman Bella Veloz is hitting .615 with 28 RBI, senior first baseman Miranda Norman is hitting .326 with four home runs and shortstop Kayla Vukavich is batting .446 with 20 RBI.

Coach Al Rodriguez is extremely proud of how well his team is playing. The Lady Grizzlies are currently ranked third in Division 6 behind Paraclete (14-0, 8-0) and Savanna (22-1-1, 5-0), respectively.
