Sports Briefs: Softball, baseball pre-seasons wrapping up

DOWNEY – The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 5-3 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount on 4/7. 

The Bears split a double header against Kennedy of Buena Park with a 4-0 loss in the first game and a 7-1 win in the second game on 3/22.

Warren is participating in the Diamond Bar Tournament over spring break. The Bears played Montebello and Diamond Bar yesterday at 3:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., respectively (scores unavailable at press time). Warren is scheduled to play today and tomorrow based on what they do in their first two games.

The Bears have been led this season by senior captains Ashley Machado and Crystal Carrillo. Junior pitcher Jocelyn Hernandez has been solid with 1.42 E.R.A. and .471 batting average and sophomore Brooklyn Sepulveda's has been consistent on defense with her .980 fielding percentage.

Warren will begin S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount on 4/7. Warren will travel to Gahr on 4/12, will host cross-town rival Downey on 4/14 and will travel to Dominguez on 4/19.

The Bears will host Lynwood on 4/21, will travel to Paramount on 4/26 and will host Gahr on 4/28. Warren will close out their regular season schedule when they travel to Downey on 5/3, when they host Dominguez on 5/5 and when they travel to Lynwood on 5/10. The Bears also have a non-league game scheduled against Mayfair at Mayfair on 5/9.

Coach Starksen, her staff and players are looking forward to the start of league play and making another run in the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Warren is currently ranked 13th in the latest C.I.F. Division 3 poll.

The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 5-9 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Dominguez on 4/7. 

The Lady Vikings will then host Lynwood on 4/23, travel to cross-town rival Warren on 4/14, travel to Gahr on 4/19 and will host Paramount on 4/21.

Downey competed in the Torrance National Tournament before spring break from 3/16-19 and finished with a record of 3-2. The Lady Vikings were defeated by Redondo Union 7-2 on 3/16, were defeated by South Torrance 9-3 on 3/17, defeated Frontier 8-1 on 3/18, defeated Culver City 9-7 on 3/19 at 8:00 a.m. and also defeated Marlborough 6-0 on 3/19 at 12 p.m.

The Lady Vikings are currently competing in the Whittier Christian Tournament over spring break. Downey played Whittier Christian on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time), played California yesterday, will play Buena Park later today and will play Cantwell-Sacred Heart tomorrow followed by an undetermined opponent after the C-SH game in the afternoon. 

Downey will begin their second round of league play when they host Dominguez on 4/26. Downey will then travel to Lynwood on 4/28, will host Warren on 5/3, will host Gahr on 5/5 and will travel to Paramount on 5/10.

The Warren High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 7-3 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount on 4/12. 

The Bears have two more preseason games scheduled. Warren played Mayfair on Wednesday in the St. Paul Tournament (score unavailable at press time), will play Santa Ana at Santa Ana tomorrow and will play West Ranch at Warren on Tuesday.

Warren is currently on a three game win streak. The Bears are 4-2 at home and 3-1 on the road. The Bears will open up S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount on 4/12 and when they travel to Paramount on 4/15. Warren will travel to Gahr on 4/19 and will then host Gahr on 4/22. The Bears will host cross-town rival Downey on 4/26 and will then travel to Downey on 4/29. 

Warren will travel to Dominguez on 5/3 and will then host Dominguez on 5/6. Warren will conclude S.G.V.L. play when they host Lynwood on 5/10 and when they travel to Lynwood on 5/12. The Bears also have a non-league game scheduled against Hemet at Warren on 5/7.

Coach Pearson, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of S.G.V.L. play. Warren is currently ranked 194th in the state, 90th in the C.I.F. Southern Section and 23rd in Division 2. Warren was eliminated by Etiwanda in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs last season.

The Downey High School baseball team currently has an overall record of 4-7 and will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Dominguez on 4/12 and when they host Dominguez on 4/15.

Downey is currently competing in the St. Paul Tournament over spring break. The Vikings were defeated by Mayfair 9-2 on 3/17 and were defeated by Narbonne 4-1 on 3/26. Downey defeated Salesian of Los Angeles on Monday at Downey 9-6, defeated Serra of Gardena at Downey 7-6 on Tuesday and played Oak Hills of Hesperia on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time).

Downey will also be competing in the Beach Pit Classic as spring break concludes. The Vikings are scheduled to play at Estancia tomorrow, at Corona Del Mar on Monday, at Beckman on Tuesday and at Pacifica on Wednesday. Downey also has non-league games scheduled against Bellflower at Bellflower on 4/11 and against Glenn at Glenn on 4/14.

The Vikings will host Lynwood on 4/19 and will then travel to Lynwood on 4/22. Downey will travel to cross-town rival Warren on 4/26 and will then host Warren on 4/29. The Vikings will travel to Gahr on 5/3 and will then host Gahr on 5/6. The Vikings will conclude their regular season schedule when they host Paramount on 5/10 and when they travel to Paramount on 5/12.  

Coach Gonzalez, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of S.G.V.L. play. The Vikings have an excellent chance to sweep their first two S.G.V.L. series' and start their league season off 4-0.
