Sports Recap: Downey wrestlers beat Laguna Hills

DOWNEY – The Downey High School wrestling team defeated Laguna Hills last Wednesday night, 37-29. Downey is now 1-0 in dual meet competition. 

Downey also traveled to Bakersfield last Saturday to compete at the Bakersfield “Battle for the Rig” Individual Tournament. 

In the dual meet against Laguna Hills, Downey 106 pounder Jonathan Prata pinned his opponent in the first period, Downey 113 pounder Dylan Ajtun won by major decision and Downey 120 pounder Rolando Dominguez won by decision. Laguna Hills won by pin at 126 and 132 pounds. Downey 138 pounder Armando Padilla won in overtime.

Laguna Hills won by pin at 145 and 152 pounds. Downey 160 pounder Pablo Ochoa pinned his opponent in the second period and Downey 170 pounder Nic Arrelano won by decision.

Laguna Hills won by pin at 182 pounds. Downey 195 pounder Immanuel Bravo won by decision, Downey 220 pounder Bradley Russell won by decision and Downey heavyweight (285) Leo Benitez won by injury default.  

Downey finished third at the Bakersfield “Battle for the Rig” Tournament behind Bakersfield and Temecula. De La Salle finished fourth to round out the top four placers. Downey sophomore Dylan Ajtun placed first at 113 pounds and was selected as the lower weight MVP of the tournament. 

Downey’s eight other tournament placers included; Jonathan Prata (2nd) at 106, Joseph Lopez (4th) at 113, Roland Dominguez (5th) at 120, Armando Padilla (3rd) at 138, Adrian Segovia (5th) at 145, Pablo Ochoa (4th) at 160, Nic Arellano (5th) at 170 and Bradley Russell (5th) at 220.

The Downey High School boys’ basketball team is currently 4-0 and won the Buena Park Tournament last week. The Vikings won three games to become tournament champions. 

The Vikings defeated tournament host Buena Park (4-1) 82-59 in their first game on 12/2. Downey then defeated Beckman (3-1) 62-41 in the semifinal round on 12/4 to advance to the tournament final. The Vikings then defeated Santa Fe (4-1) 60-46 on 12/5 to win the tournament title.

In the Buena Park game Downey led 24-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 43-24 at halftime. The Vikings led 60-42 at the end of the third quarter and won 82-59.

In the Beckman game Downey led 25-6 at the end of the first quarter and led 37-22 at halftime. The Vikings led 49-32 at the end of the third quarter and won 62-41.

In the Santa Fe game Downey trailed 16-13 at the end of the first quarter but rallied to lead 37-29 at halftime. The Vikings extended their lead to 46-35 at the end of the third quarter and won 60-46.

Downey will look to improve to 5-0 as they host Lakewood (3-1) later this evening. The Vikings will start San Gabriel Valley League play on 1/13 when they travel to Dominguez to face the Dons. 

Senior forward C. J. Smith has averaged 18.5 per game, senior guard Tyler Dees has averaged 12 points per game and junior guard Brian Chavez has averaged 10.8 points per game to pace Downey’s offensive attack.

The Warren High School boys’ basketball team currently has a record of 3-1. 

The Bears competed in the Cerritos/Gahr Varsity Tip-Off Tournament 11/30-12/5. Warren was defeated by Cerritos (4-0) 66-48 on 11/30, defeated Long Beach Millikan (2-2) 85-82 on 12/1, defeated Bell (0-4) 36-23 on 12/4 and defeated Western of Anaheim (2-2) 55-47 on 12/5.
In the Cerritos game Warren trailed 17-8 after the first quarter and 37-21 at halftime. The Bears trailed 57-29 at the end of the third quarter and were defeated 66-48.

In the Millikan game Warren trailed 19-17 at the end of the first quarter but took the lead 46-40 at halftime. The Bears led 65-64 at the end of the third quarter and held on to win 85-82.
In the Bell game Warren trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter but took the lead 18-12 at halftime. Warren led 31-14 at the end of the third quarter and ended up winning 36-23. 

Warren played Fairmont Prep on 12/9 (score unavailable at press time) and will play Aquinas of San Bernardino tomorrow. The Bears are scheduled to play Rancho Cucamonga on 12/26 in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic Ford Dealers Division. The Maxpreps Tournament will be held 12/26-30.

The Bears will play Cabrillo of Long Beach on 1/2 in the 2nd Annual Ron Massey Tip-Off Classic. Warren will then play Long Beach Wilson at Warren on 1/4, will travel to La Salle of Pasadena on 1/6 and will play Renaissance Academy of Altadena on 1/9. 

Warren will begin S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount on 1/13. The Bears will then travel to Gahr on 1/15, will host cross-town rival Downey on 1/20, will travel to Dominguez on 1/22 and will host Lynwood on 1/27.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has a record of 2-1. 

The Lady Bears defeated Long Beach Poly at Warren 4-0 on 12/1, were defeated by Mater Dei at Mater Dei 4-0 on 12/3 and defeated La Mirada at Warren 4-3 on 12/4.

The Lady Bears traveled to University High School in Irvine on Tuesday to play the Lady Trojans (score unavailable at press time). Warren will play two games tomorrow. The Lady Bears will play Canyon Country Canyon at 9:20 a.m. and will play La Quinta at 3:20 p.m. in the Best of the West Tournament. 

Warren will also play in the North Orange County Tournament in late December. The Lady Bears will play St. Joseph’s of Lakewood at 8:00 a.m. and Rio Mesa of Oxnard at 2:30 p.m. on December 28.  

Warren will play at Ocean View on 1/5 and will open S.G.V.L. play against Paramount at Paramount on 1/12. The Lady Bears will then host Gahr on 1/14, will travel to cross-town rival Downey on 1/19, will host Dominguez on 1/21 and will travel to Lynwood on 1/26.

The Lady Bears finished last season with an overall record of 18-4-3 and were 8-1-1 in S.G.V.L play. The Lady Bears were S.G.V.L. co-champions with Downey. Warren lost to Torrance at Torrance 2-0 in the second round of the 2015 C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Coach Dussan, her staff and players are looking forward to the start of the 2015-16 soccer season.
