UCLA alumni group honored by Maywood

MAYWOOD – The Southeast Bruins were honored Wednesday by the mayor and council members for the city of Maywood for their community service efforts. Mayor Eddie De La Riva honored the group with a plaque and official certificates on behalf of the city of Maywood, Assemblymember Anthony Rendon’s office, as well as Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard.

De La Riva, who is himself a UCLA alumnus, presented the awards to the Southeast Bruins for the group’s participation in a Thanksgiving turkey drive stating, “On behalf of the city of Maywood, I would like to thank the Southeast Bruins for helping to raise funds and helping distribute over 100 turkey vouchers for people who are in need. May we continue to work together and expand upon this great partnership.”

The Southeast Bruins is recognized officially as the regional chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is known officially as the UCLA Alumni Los Angeles Southeast Network.

The Southeast Bruins’ commitment to service was in display during Wednesday night’s council meeting when the group presented the city of Maywood with a check that will be used to continue a local food bank that distributes food and groceries to people in need. The food bank is spearheaded by the American Idol Gives Back Foundation but depends upon donations to help cover some of the logistical costs.

The donation by the Southeast Bruins will allow the food bank to continue for the entirety of the 2015 year.

Ricardo Perez, vice president of the Southeast Bruins, presented the check to the city stating, “Thank you for welcoming our group into your city. We respectfully present to you this check and do so in the hope that it will serve as the foundation of our great partnership.

“Thank you and thanks to our members for making this possible. Go Bruins.”
