Virginia Brumley worked on Apollo

DOWNEY - Virginia Brumley, a longtime Downey resident who worked in the aerospace industry helping to build several space shuttles, passed away Sept. 28. She lived alone and led an active life until just weeks before she died at the age of 91.

She worked at the Rockwell plant in Downey (later Boeing) until her early 70s, working on the Apollo program and the Columbia, Discovery, Challenger, Enterprise, Endeavour and Atlantis space shuttles. Family members said she was "always proud to be a part of something as special as our space program."

She is survived by her 95-year-old sister in New York, several nieces and nephews, and numerous great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews, many of whom live in Downey.

Services will be held Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower.
