Warren golfers beat Downey in rivalry match

DOWNEY – The Warren High School boys’ golf team defeated cross-town rival Downey Tuesday afternoon 219-231.

Warren was led by David Gutierrez’s 40, Vincent Quintero’s 43, Johan Ayala’s 43, Jesse Castillo’s 46 and Joseph Ramirez’s 47.

The Bears’ sixth golfer, Reagan Cardoza, finished with a score of 51.

In high school golf, the five lowest scores are used to determine the winner.

Coach Schmid, her staff and players are pleased with the win against Downey and are now looking forward to finishing off their season on a strong note and qualifying for postseason play.


WARREN BOYS VOLLEYBALL: The Warren High School boys’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 7-6 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 3-1.

The Bears defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 3-0 on March 20th, defeated Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on March 26th, defeated Gahr at Warren 3-1 on March 28th and were defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 3-0 on April 2nd.

The Bears hosted Dominguez at Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

Warren is scheduled to host Lynwood at Warren next Tuesday, April 9th, and will host Paramount at Warren next Thursday, April 11.

Coach Lane, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play on a strong note and qualifying for the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.


DOWNEY SOFTBALL
: The Downey High School softball team currently has an overall record of 9-7 and are 3-0 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Lady Vikings defeated Paramount at Paramount 10-4 on March 26th, defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 17-0 on March 28th and defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 20-0 on April 2nd.

In non-league play, the Lady Vikings defeated San Clemente 12-2 and defeated Sunny Hills 5-4, also on March 30th. Downey will compete in the Michelle Carew Classic this weekend where they will play Canyon of Anaheim at 1:00 p.m. and Cathedral Canyon of San Diego at 5:15 p.m. The Carew Classic will continue next weekend against “to be determined” opponents based on ongoing tournament results.

Downey will host Gahr at Downey on April 9th, will host Paramount at Downey on April 11 and will travel to Dominguez to play the Lady Dons on April 16. Coach Garcia, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play on a strong note and qualifying for postseason play.

The Lady Vikings were co-champions with Gahr (9-1) last season. Gahr is currently ranked 32nd in California, Downey is ranked 111th and Warren is ranked 171st. All three teams are looking to earn a piece of the S.G.V.L. title.


DOWNEY BOYS VOLLEYBALL: The Downey High School boys’ volleyball team currently has an overall record of 20-8 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 4-0.

The Vikings recently competed in the Yorba Linda Tournament March 29th and 30th where they finished with a record of 3-2. The Vikings were defeated by Shadow Ridge of Las Vegas 2-1 on March 29th at 3:00 p.m., defeated Classical Academy of Escondido 2-1 on March 29th at 4:00 p.m. and defeated Paloma Valley of Menifee 2-0 on March 29th at 8:00 p.m.

The Vikings defeated Yorba Linda 2-1 on March 30th at 10:00 a.m. and were defeated by Arbor View of Las Vegas 2-0, also on March 30th. In league play, the Vikings defeated cross town rival Warren at Downey 3-0 on Tuesday, April 2nd, and hosted Gahr at Downey yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

With the win against Warren on Tuesday, Downey now has the inside track to another league title.

The Vikings will host Paramount at Downey on April 9th, will travel to Dominguez to face the Dons on April 11th, will travel to Gahr to face the Gladiators on April 12th, will host Lynwood at Downey on April 16th and will travel to Warren on April 18th to conclude their regular season schedule.


WARREN SOFTBALL: The Warren High School softball team currently has an overall record of 8-8 and are 2-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Bears recently competed in the La Mirada Tournament where they went 2-2 over two weekends.

Warren was defeated by Cajon of San Bernardino 6-2 at 9:00 a.m. in their first game and defeated Diamond Ranch of Pomona 6-5 at 1:00 p.m. in their second game, also on March 23rd. The Bears defeated Millikan 5-3 in their third game and were defeated by Chino 4-1 in their fourth and final game, also on March 30th.

In league play, Warren defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 25-2 on March 26th, defeated Paramount at Paramount 16-6 on March 28th and were defeated by Gahr at Warren 7-3 on Tuesday. Warren traveled to cross-town rival Downey yesterday for the first of their two scheduled league games (score unavailable at press time) and will host Dominguez at Warren next Tuesday.

The Bears will participate in the Thousand Oaks Tournament this weekend and next weekend where they will play Agoura in their first game tomorrow. Warren will resume the Thousand Oaks Tournament next weekend against opponents “to be determined” based on ongoing tournament results.
