Surgery to repair a detached retina in Mayor Mario Guerra's previously "good" eye was successful, according to his wife, Ann, who updated friends and family on Facebook yesterday.

"The Eagle has landed!," she wrote. "Lots of pain and nausea. Now lots of rest ahead per doctor's orders for recovery."

You gotta feel bad for the mayor, who was all set to launch his "Healthy Downey" initiative this month in an effort to get residents active and healthy.

The first of his scheduled "community walks" is set for Jan. 9, but no word yet if it's still a go.
