When the Downey city council fired city attorney Ed Lee two years ago, it wasn't for incompetence or anything he had done wrong in Downey. He was fired because Lee was also counsel for the city of Bell and Downey officials wanted no part of the scandal that engulfed the tiny working-class city.
Turns out it was likely a good decision by Downey council members.
Yesterday, lawyers for the eight Bell council members on trial for public corruption use their opening statement to place the blame squarely on Lee.
"Ladies and gentleman, the buck starts with the city attorney," a defense attorney said, according to the L.A. Times.
Lee has denied any wrongdoing in Bell or elsewhere. He has not been charged.
"I am confident that my reputation will be restored in time as events unfold and all of the facts are revealed," Lee said after his dismissal from Downey. "Until that happens, my concern for my colleagues... and their clients must prevail."
