Five things you need to know this Friday morning:
.) U.S. Olympians Becky Kim and Sherry Calvert will be at the Downey YMCA tomorrow speaking about their Olympic experiences. Kim competed in synchronized swimming at the 2008 Beijing Olympics while Calvert was a javelin thrower at the 1972 and 1976 summer games. The event begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the entire community, not just Y members.
.) The city has scheduled a meeting Thursday, June 26, to explore the possibility of becoming a host city for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. As a host city, Downey would be responsible for hosting up to 120 athletes and coaches, and providing accommodations, meals, training sites, and more. The informational meeting begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center.
.) The Planning Commission this week approved Downey Calvary’s July 4 fireworks show at Downey High. It’s a church event, although it’s open to the public.
.) A suspected drunk driver hit a pedestrian early Sunday morning near Downey Avenue and 3rd Street. The story from ABC-7.
.) City officials are contemplating posting “No Swim” signs after two kids were spotted swimming in the Wilderness Park lakes recently. I mean, really?
