Apartment complex evacuated after tree fire
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

The 99 Cent Store and a nearby apartment complex were evacuated this afternoon after a tree and live electrical power lines caught fire.

Downey Fire Department Engine 61 responded to the blaze near Paramount Boulevard and Stewart & Gray Road “and requested a full structure response and initiated evacuations of the apartment building and store,” said Downey battalion chief Bruce English.

“Fire crews initiated fire attack and quickly extinguished the tree fire,” English said.

The apartment building suffered minor damage and residents were allowed back into their homes within an hour. Southern California Edison repaired the downed power line within two hours, English said.

The cause of the fire was undermined.
