Downey’s latest nightlife establishment, The Wet Bar, could open as soon as this weekend, the lounge hinted on Facebook.
The bar posted a picture of a Bacardi delivery truck with the caption, “Can that possibly mean we are getting ready to open? Maybe just maybe this weekend? I don’t know everyone, I have to hear some excitement out there!!!”
Approved by the Planning Commission last October, the casual bar is located at 8832 Imperial Hwy., off Lakewood Boulevard. Formerly a karate center, the property has been extensively remodeled and features upscale interior designs, including a rock waterfall facing the entrance.
“This provides a pleasant and attractive appearance for the business,” city planners wrote in a report.
In his application for a type 48 liquor license, bar owner Luis Gomez said his business “would provide a lively environment and improve the aesthetics of the commercial center.”
The Wet Bar will be open seven days a week from noon to 2 a.m.
Planning commissioners voted 2-1 (with Robert Kiefer dissenting) in approving the bar’s alcohol license but with conditions, including that Gomez hire three licensed and uniformed security guards if requested by Downey police chief Carl Charles.
Gomez also agreed to keep the parking lot well-lit and to post signs identifying a zero-tolerance policy for nuisance behavior, among other conditions.
