Carport fire injures 1 person (UPDATED)

UPDATE: City officials say the fire was “human-caused” and “suspicious.” Five vehicles were destroyed.

One person was injured after a fire broke out early this morning in a north Downey apartment complex.

The blaze was reported at 1:11 a.m. inside a carport at 9146 Pico Vista Rd. Multiple vehicles caught fire and the blaze began to spread to the apartment complex, prompting Downey firefighters to request support from Santa Fe Springs and Montebello.

The fire was extinguished by 1:46 a.m. One person suffered undisclosed injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Off-duty Downey firefighters, along with fire personnel from Compton and Vernon, provided coverage at Downey fire stations while Downey firefighters battled the blaze.
