Save the date: Downey’s second annual Dia de los Muertos Art Festival has been confirmed for Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Downey Theatre.
The family-friendly festival features artisans and master craftsmen displaying, demonstrating and teaching traditional Mexican arts such as papel picado, paper mache and calaveras de azucar.
There are also displays of sculpture, paintings and altars.
“Last year’s event exceeded expectations in both attendance and in presentation,” said Arlene Salazar, Downey’s director of Parks and Recreation.
Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” is a Hispanic tradition that honors the departed. Friends and family gather, often at the cemetery, to set up altars and share remembrances of their ancestors.
