Dog park to be named after former mayor
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce, Editor

Downey’s only dog park will be named after former mayor David Gafin, the two-term councilman who championed the canine enclosure and ensured its construction in 2010.

Open daily from dawn to dusk, the dog park is enclosed on the eastern boundaries of Rio San Gabriel Park. It currently has no formal name.

Mayor Mario Guerra was first to propose naming the park after Gafin. The idea was supported unanimously by the city council.

Councilman Alex Saab said he normally would not support renaming a public facility after a recently retired public official but made an exception for Gafin, citing his extensive work as a community leader.
