A team of Downey firefighters was dispatched to Camarillo Springs today to help battle a raging wildfire that has already burned more than 6,000 acres and threatened hundreds of homes.
The Downey Fire Department answered a request for assistance from the Ventura County Fire Department at 11:23 a.m. today.
Downey Fire Engine 61 responded, carrying four firefighters as part of an Area E strike team, led by Downey battalion chief Ed Haupt and Montebello battalion chief Rick Lynsky.
The strike team also included fire personnel from Santa Fe Springs, Montebello, Vernon and West Covina.
In addition, Downey firefighter and paramedic Scott Wilcox responded to the wildfire with two other certified fireline medics from the Montebello Fire Department. Fireline medics are assigned to fire lines and are responsible for treating firefighters injured while battling the fire.
The Downey Fire Department’s Communication Center is the operational area’s coordination center for local fire departments within Area E.
Downey Fire Chief Lonnie Croom currently serves as the Area E operational area coordinator within the California master mutual aid system.
