Downey residents turn in 400-plus pounds of unwanted medicine
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

More than 400 pounds of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted drugs were collected at a prescription drug take-back event hosted by the Downey Police Department last Saturday.

All of the drugs were properly disposed by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, authorities said.

The event was part of a national effort to combat prescription drug abuse. According to a 2009 study, the rate of people who abuse prescription drugs is “alarmingly high.”

In fact, more Americans abuse prescription drugs than cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined, authorities say.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine
cabinet.
