Downey has been named an “All America City” by the National Civic League, a designation that city officials claim will help Downey attract new business and create jobs.
The award was handed down Sunday after a 3-day competition in Denver. A total of 10 cities received the award this year.
Downey sent a 21-person delegation to showcase the city’s efforts in revitalizing downtown Downey, the Columbia Memorial Space Center and its support of local veterans.
“Receiving this designation will help us recruit and retain new businesses, create new jobs and obtain grants for community betterment projects,” said Councilman Alex Saab. “Participating in Denver was invaluable in sharing our successes and learning from other cities across the country in how to make Downey even better.”
“To win this prominent national award confirms what we have always known, we are a special city with a unique history and a promising future,” added Mayor Mario Guerra.
Local cities that have earned the All America City award include Lynwood (2010), Inglewood (2009), Cerritos (2008), South Gate (1990), Montebello (1975), La Habra (1973) and Santa Fe Springs (1971).
