WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

A 93-year-old man riding an electric scooter was struck and killed as he tried to cross a Downey street today.

Police said the man stopped on his scooter on the west sidewalk of Columbia Way, just south of Lakewood Boulevard.

As he tried to cross Columbia Way eastbound, he was struck by a 2014 Honda Accord traveling south on Columbia Way.

The elderly man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Honda – a 40-year-old Downey man – was not injured, nor was his passenger.

Police did not say if the driver of the Honda was cited.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has more information is asked to call Detective Edwards at (562) 904-2339 or Sgt. Miller at (562) 904-2342.
