'Explosion' sparks blackout in central Downey
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

More than 1,800 homes and businesses are without power right now after some sort of electrical explosion near Brookshire Avenue and Firestone Boulevard.

The outage is most heavily affecting the downtown area. Many shops and restaurants in the area have closed due to the blackout.

Residents reported hearing several “explosions” at about 6:30 p.m. and there are unconfirmed reports that a vehicle caught fire.

“I was on the opposite corner of Brookshire & Firestone when this happened,” Carlos Sotomayer wrote on the Patriot’s Facebook page. “All I heard & felt was the loudest explosion I have ever heard and in a blink of an eye a car was on fire and the intersection lights were gone. I hope everyone is ok.”

Power appears to be coming back slowly. Tacos El Gavilan, at Florence Avenue and Paramount Boulevard, had their power restored just after 7 p.m.
