The Suva Street bridge in northwest Downey is indefinitely closed after a fire broke out yesterday underneath the structure.
Officials believe a homeless encampment may be responsible for the blaze, although the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The bridge was closed Tuesday as a precaution until experts could evaluate whether the fire did damage to the bridge’s stability.
City officials should have a better estimate of when the bridge can reopen by Wednesday afternoon, said deputy city manager John Oskoui.
The bridge is heavily used by drivers traveling between Downey and Bell Gardens, and also by residents of the “Island” neighborhood.
Alternate routes include Florence Avenue and Telegraph Road.
