Five things to know this Friday morning: 

1.) Mark Gillaspie is being sworn-in as chief of the Downey Fire Department today at 11 a.m. Ceremonies are inside council chambers.

 Charlene Shimada and Lynn Ebora have been named principals of Alameda and Rio San Gabriel elementary schools, respectively. Shimada has been with DUSD since 2001, and was most recently a resource teacher at Carpenter. Ebora is new to Downey and comes from the Culver City Unified School District, where she was an elementary school principal.

Alan Burton has filed papers to run in the election for Cerritos College Board of Trustees Area 7, which includes a portion of Downey. John Paul Drayer is the incumbent.

Shameless plug: I will be speaking about Gangs Out of Downey this Sunday at the Krikorian Theatre starting at 10 a.m. The event is hosted by Praise Chapel Downey and also will include a talk by Councilman Mario Guerra.
