Five things to know this Friday morning:
1.) The Downey Bicycle Coalition will host the first of its summer long rides tomorrow. The group meets at Furman Park at 7:30 a.m., departing across town to the Rio San Gabriel Bike Path at 8, and heading south to Seal Beach.
After a refreshment stop, the ride returns to Furman Park via the L.A. River Bike Path. Helmets are required for riders under the age of 18 (but encouraged for all).
2.) The Downey Police Department has been awarded a $20,000 state grant to help prevent alcohol sales to minors.
Downey PD received the money from the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control after jointly applying with the Whittier and Bell Gardens police departments. The majority of the funds will pay for overtime devoted to training and enforcement.
3.) Former featherweight champion and current Downey resident Abner Mares will face Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo in the co-feature of Saturday’s Showtime PPV event. The main event pits Canelo Alvarez against Erislandy Lara in a non-title fight.
4.) An annual tradition since 2000, the “Mile-Long Yard Sale” on Pangborn Avenue takes place this weekend. More than 30 homes are slated to participate.
5.) From Twitter user @ximenakp: “Downey needs to invest in an app that lets you know where construction is being done that day!”
