Friday morning report, July 18
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

Five things to know this Friday morning:

1.) Mayor Fernando Vasquez is challenging Wednesday’s decision by the Planning Commission to allow go-go dancers at a Downey nightclub, and you can expect it to be a topic of conversation at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“I was shocked and outraged by the events that occurred [Wednesday],” Vasquez said. “We are a city of values that holds good character in high regard. This sends the wrong message to our Downey families.”

Council members rarely, if ever, publicly involve themselves with Planning Commission matters, but city officials say they have received dozens of calls and emails from residents opposed to go-go dancers, though no one spoke in opposition to Club DB Lounge’s proposal at the Planning Commission meeting.

2.) The Downey Fire Department hosted badge-pinning ceremonies yesterday for new promotions, including assistant chief Bruce English, who fills the vacancy left by Mark Gillaspie, who was recently elevated to fire chief, replacing Lonnie Croom.

3.) Brookshire Park will have its grand re-opening tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., where visitors can see its new playground and walking trail.

“Our city parks add value to our community and it’s exciting to know that our Downey youth and their families will be able to enjoy these new park amenities,” said Vasquez. “The new playground equipment and walking trail will not only help beautify and enhance the park, but will promote healthy physical activity, which goes hand-in-hand with the goal of our Stay Healthy Downey initiative.”

Grand opening ceremonies are from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include family activities and free shaved ice.

4.) Downey residents and real estate agents Jeff and Lois Worthy are holding a contest to see who can correctly guess the most UCLA-USC football game outcomes. Winner gets an iPad. Sign up at worthyproperties.net.

5.) A local softball team is hosting a taco night fundraiser from 5-8:30 p.m. at Independence Park. Downey’s 10U Gold All Stars (pictured) are trying to raise money to play in a national tournament. Tonight’s fundraiser includes a friendly game against Los Alamitos.
