Dr. John Garcia, a deputy superintendent in Glendale, has been chosen to replace Dr. Wendy Doty as superintendent of the Downey Unified School District.
Garcia’s employment contract still needs to be approved by the board of education on Feb. 19. He is expected to start work here immediately as a “superintendent designate” before officially taking over April 1.
A product of DUSD, Garcia attended Carpenter Elementary, South Middle School and graduated from Downey High in 1985.
After high school, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Long Beach, a teaching credential from Cal State Dominguez Hills, a master’s degree in education form Cal State Fullerton, and an MBA and doctorate from Claremont Graduate University.
His teaching career started in the Inglewood Unified School District before he moved to the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District. He worked as a high school principal with Newport-Mesa USD before taking his current position as deputy superintendent for educational services in Glendale.
Doty announced her retirement last year, effective March 31.
